Y1-67 DNA RESULTS FOR R-U198 LYNNS, LYNES, LINNS, ETC.

© 2011, 2021 John Sloan and Loretta (Lynn) Layman

R-U198 is a haplogroup within the huge R1b super-haplogroup that is ubiquitous in Western Europe.  R-U198 is much less common, generally comprising as little as 2% - 3% of the male population in the countries
where it is most prevalent, such as the United Kingdom.
R-U198 may in turn be subdivided.  The Lynns belong to R-DF89, which is a significant branch of R-U198.  However, they do not belong to R-DF89's largest
sub-group, which we call "type G".  We have therefore used the appropriate modal values for the first line ("R-U198: DF89 excl. type G") in this chart of DNA results for comparison with our Lynns
.

Lynn vs. Flynn:   The lack of R-U198 in Gaelic populations, and particularly its absence among those Flynns who have had Y-DNA tests, together evidence the fact that R-U198 Lynns did not derive their surname
from Flynn / O'Flynn.  This finding is compatible with the paper trails for certain R-U198 Lynns being Ulster Scots, some with a known Presbyterian history in Ulster.

Color Key . . .

R-U198 Lynn “Motif” : A motif is a set of marker values which are significantly different from the modal values of the broader group to which a subgroup or family belongs.  Marker values highlighted here in this color
represent "typical" R-U198 Lynn Y-DNA.  There are 7 such markers on this page and 2 on the following page (markers 68-111).

Other Putative Ancestral Lynn Values (all on this page) :  We believe these may also be the R-U198 Lynn ancestral values at these markers but do not suggest viewing them as part of the Lynn Motif at present.1/
            1st new line within the R-U198 Lynn family : DYS393 (this page).2/

2nd new line within the R-U198 Lynn family : CDYa-b and DYS444 (both, this page); DYS540 (next page).

3rd new line within the R-U198 Lynn family : DYS534 (this page).

4th new line within the R-U198 Lynn family : YCAiia-b (this page).  See also, footnote 4/ to the chart below.

"Chaff" (i.e., unhelpful sporadic mutations) : Some chaff mutations clearly happened only in recent generations and do not reflect common ancestry.

1
CDYa and CDYb do appear to suggest a progressive mutation from the broader haplogroup value to a slightly lower value for the original R-U198 Lynn ancestor and thence to an even lower
value in the 2nd new line.  DYS534 may represent an R-U198 Lynn value with the 3rd new line having experienced a back mutation to the broader haplogroup value.

2/ The word "line" as used here is not meant to imply a direct lineage in the genealogical sense but instead indicates that everyone in a particular new line shares a common ancestor more
recently with each other than with those outside their new line.

1/ While Brian has had just 37 markers tested, those 37 include 5 of the 6 Lynn motif markers that appear among the first 37.

2/ DYS534 appears to have a Lynn modal value of 14, with M.Ch.'s line and those below him having experienced a back (reverse) mutation to the R-U198 value of 15, although this scenario has yet to be proven.

3/ While Jerry has had just 37 markers tested, those 37 include all 6 of the Lynn motif markers that appear among the first 37.

4/ Milton and Charles are full brothers.  At YCAiib, their line is believed to have shared the mutation from the R-U198 value of 22 to the value of 21 that is also found in M. Woodward and Jeffrey J.  However, Milton's and Charles's line
is further believed to include a back mutation at YCAiib, meaning that it reverted sometime more recently - i.e., in some generation between their father and their 3rd-great-grandfather - from 21 to 22.  While this scenario is not
proven by the test results in and of themselves, it is entirely compatible with the known genealogy and the fact that back mutations do occur.
This scenario should be proven, or disproven, if and when additional Y-DNA matches
turn up in the family line shared between Milton and Charles, on the one hand, and M. Woodward on the other.  M. Woodward is a direct male descendant of a brother of Milton's and Charles's 3rd-great-grandfather.
