John Lynn of Drumreagh,
Most Distant Known Patrilineal Ancestor
Most of the following data was discovered through the efforts of Cindy Minn and Sherry Minn, cousins of John Lewis Lynn. John Lynn was born about 1810 and became a joiner (carpenter) in Drumreagh, County Antrim, Ireland. He and his wife, Catherine Scott, were named as parents in the death records for their daughter Agnes and son Andrew, which also list John's occupation. However, it is the 1836 baptism of their eldest daughter, Peggy, that offers the earliest mention of Drumreagh, the village John and Catherine first called home. Ballymoney, the parish in which Drumreagh is situated, is named in British military records as the birth place of their son Charles. All the children of John and Catherine (Scott) Lynn are proven by baptism, census, military, and/or death records. John Lynn died rather young, and little else is known of his life except that he might have had a brother named Stewart. One Stewart Lynn lived in Drumreagh in 1843, and John and Catherine named a son Stewart in about 1847. The elder Stewart Lynn appeared in Drumreagh again in 1862. John's death, probably in Ireland, occurred sometime before 31 March 1851. On the latter date, Catherine appeared as a widow in the census of Scotland in Grahamston, Stirlingshire, with just their 12-year-old daughter, Agnes. The other children apparently remained in Ireland for a time; but two of the sons, Andrew and Stewart, joined their mother in Stirlingshire sometime before the 1861 census. They were then living in Larbert Parish. Catherine (Scott) Lynn lived another six years and died of typhus, in Larbert Parish, on 11 March 1866. Her record of death describes her as the 55-year-old widow of Peter Wright, a mason, and her parents as Archibald Scott, linen weaver, and Marion Scott née Taylor, both deceased. The informant was son-in-law W. Brisbane, husband of Agnes Lynn. Any confusion about Catherine’s marriage to John Lynn is settled by Agnes’s own 1912 death record and the 1906 death record of Andrew. Andrew's record of death states that Andrew Lynn, furnace labourer, age 60, single, died on 15 December 1906 in Edmond's Lane, Stenhousemuir, Larbert Parish, Stirlingshire, and that his parents were John Lynn, joiner, deceased, and Catherine Wright, previously Lynn, nee Scott, deceased. Agnes's record of death states that Agnes Brisbane, age 70, widow of William Brisbane, furnaceman, died on 14 May 1912 in Castlehill, Larbert Parish, Stirlingshire, and that her parents were John Lynn, joiner, deceased, and Catherine Wright, previously Lynn, nee Scott, deceased. Regrettably, nothing has yet been discovered about John Lynn's death or burial. Sources
